Practice Guidelines
At GIA, we aim to ensure that architectural practice in Ghana meets the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, safety, and service to the public. These guidelines provide a framework for architects, firms and clients to engage in architecture with clarity, integrity and excellence.
Practice Guidelines
A professional framework that ensures excellence, integrity, and compliance in architectural practice across Ghana.
Professional Responsibilities
Every practising architect must be registered with the Architects Registration Council (ARC) and maintain competence across design, technical, and regulatory disciplines. Architects must act independently, avoid conflicts of interest, and ensure compliance with Ghana’s building laws and standards.
Ethical and Business Practice
Architects must uphold honesty, integrity, and transparency in all dealings. Fees, contracts, and scope of services must be clearly defined in writing. Advertising should be dignified and not misleading. All professional activities must comply with GIA’s Code of Conduct and fair practice rules.
Quality, Safety & Sustainability
Designs must prioritise safety, structural integrity, and environmental responsibility. Architects are encouraged to adopt passive design strategies, use sustainable materials, and create energy-efficient spaces suited to Ghana’s climate.
Scope of Services & Deliverables
Clearly define project stages, deliverables, and responsibilities from concept to completion. Architects must provide accurate drawings, manage design coordination, review contractor submissions, and oversee quality control on site.
Engagement with Clients & Stakeholders
Build clear communication and collaboration with clients, consultants, contractors, and communities. Ensure all project parties understand their roles, and decisions are made transparently and ethically.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Maintain lifelong learning through GIA-approved CPD activities, workshops, research, and seminars. Firms are encouraged to create mentorship and quality assurance systems for ongoing improvement.
Compliance & Enforcement
Failure to comply with GIA’s Code of Conduct and Practice Guidelines may result in disciplinary action or suspension. Members must report unethical conduct or unsafe practices and promote professional accountability.
